Really, you don't need to have watched the proto-hacker movies of 1983 to know there's not much fun to be had with this game. Nevertheless, I spent much of the weekend putting together a playable game of Tic Tac Toe. There are 3 (soon to be 4) different kinds of AI, one which you can beat, and two which should play you to a draw, unless there are bugs in my code.
If there is an interesting thing about this game, and I'm not saying there is, it's that I've divided the AI out from the game logic in such a way that I can reuse the game structure pretty easily, including the AI code in its entirety, and go forward to less trivial games. Some games I'm itching to implement:
- Dots and Boxes
- Reversi (aka "Othello", which is a racy reference that I didn't get when I first learned to play)
- various games in the Mancala family (Kalah is the one most Americans are familiar with, but there are more challenging games like Oware that wouldn't be hard to do at the same time)
... and so on.
And, if I give in to the pedagogical itch, I'll clean up my code and have it around as a reference for up-and-coming folks who want to do a small game in their spare time.
