Reason #16336 why I want to kick a druggie in the head
So, all the good cold remedies used to have pseudoephedrine, which according to Wikipedia:

is being phased out as an over-the-counter drug and replaced by alternative decongestants like phenylephrine, due to pseudoephedrine's extreme popularity as a precursor in the illicit synthesis of methamphetamine.

So, junkies like their meth, which means my NyQuil doesn't work anymore. Thanks a lot.

I used to be able to rely on NyQuil to trigger some really good sleeps, although perhaps not entirely deep - as I'd remember some wild dreams on NyQuil. The latest bottle that I got trumpets ibuprofen as the active ingredient, which hardly seems like the same thing.

All that said, I did have a dream this morning about touring Lichtenstein. I suspected during the tour that we actually left Lichtenstein to extend the tour. In my dream, we crossed the western border and ended up in Belgium - which, of course, is incorrect - Switzerland is the country to the west.

Warning: NyQuil should not be taken if you need to accurately find your way around Europe.

Ha! Of course, I can't think when I'm on NyQuil anyway.

That used to be the joy of NyQuil - it used to knock me out and, true to their advertising, I'd be able to get some rest.

With the current formulation, I was in and out of sleep, listening to my breath percolating through my lungs. To drown this out, I turned on KUOW/BBC, which probably seeded my semiconscious brain with continental place names.

The galling part is that I have heard more than once (don't know how much stock to put in it) that phenylephrine gets broken down and passed through the body before it even has a chance to take effect - so all you're really doing is putting your digestive tract through its paces.

I can't wait for some druggie to figure out how to get high on rubber so that the shitheads in charge of our national discourse can decide to make all tires out of paper-mache.

For a while, there was a semi-controlled category of OTC drugs that you actually had to ask the pharmacist for. It was a hassle, but for those of us that know pseudoephedrine from phenylephrine from Aunt Effie, it was an adequate solution.

I don't know, maybe that's still an option and I just missed it at my local supermarket.

In Oregon, you actually need a doctor's prescription to get pseudoephedrine.

The fake shit does nothing for me. Nothing. So, I show my ID, and I get me the real stuff from behind the counter.

Yeah, I think that's the right solution now.

Although, I am reveling in the overloading of the word "productive" in my current vocabulary. I may not be productive at work, but at least I'm being productive at work. Ew.

scoreboard read somewhere that the placebo works better than phenylephrine. Nice! =P

In CA, we can ask the pharmacist for the "good stuff" as I call it, since it's the only stuff that works. My main gripe about that is that the right mix of ingredients for my usual head cold was the Sudafed orange pills, but now Sudafed only makes the orange pills with the phenylephrine. They don't even make it with pseudoephedrine that you can buy behind the counter. Argh! That means when I get my usual head cold, I have to buy each ingredient separately: nasal decongestant, expectorant, and cough suppressant. And I'll take some ibuprofen if I really need it, too.

There's a part of me that objects to overmedicating, but at this point, just give me the elephant gun that hits all my symptoms. I'll wrestle with my conscience once I'm feeling better.

I've had some decent succes with the Tylenol liquid OTC cold medicine, though the last batch wasn't as handy.

Still being in the throes of some illness that's been here since New Year's, I sympathize. I found some old 12-hour meds from who KNOWS when that were awesome. Until they ran out. My doc actually recommended one of the behind-the-counter OTC drugs, as they tend to be a little stronger. I'm using Claritin-D right now, which is doing pretty well. Try asking at your pharmacy counter and see if they can't hook you up with something.

Heh, yeah, I think I'll be swinging by the pharmacy tonight on the way home.

I think the last time I went through this gauntlet, I carefully categorized my medicine cabinet into the good stuff and the crap. I suspect I burned through all of the good stuff back then.

One thing that I've found to accelerate the recovery process, in addition to the chicken soup, orange juice and vitamin C that everybody else knows about, is to pile every blanket in the house on the bed, and crank the electric blanket up to 11. Proceed to sweat the virus out of the system. Repeat as necessary.

Best kick-ass cold combo I've ever had: Sudafed PE Cold & Allergy in tandem with Mucinex D. Worked excellently and didn't turn me into a zombie. Those Mucinex commercials are just revolting, but the product is worth it's weight in gold-pressed latinum.

Oh, and I'm with you about ejecting junkies from the planet. :)

I'm getting to the point where I don't care to take on the junkies - I say let them have their meth, if that's the price of cold medicine that works.
