Saw "The Compleat Wllm Shkspr (Abridged)". Fun.
Things I have not seen in any Shakespeare performance before tonight:
- Silly String
- Sean Connery as McDuff
- Optimus Prime
- Baby Got Back
- tapdancing, juggling, concertina-playing stage hand
- I am not left handed
- sock puppet Murder of Gonzago
- "Agent" Laertes vs The One From Denmark.
That sounds like So Much Fun. Is this the same sort of "Compleat..." they used to (maybe still do?) put on in a park somewhere in Boston/Allston? I kept meaning to see it and then moved away before I ever did.
I never saw the one you're describing, but I certainly imagine it could be - not to spoil much, but they lumped all the comedies together into one play, they lumped all the histories together into a football game, which gave them a bunch of tragedies to spend real time on.
R&J, of course got some good attention, and "The Scottish Play" right up there behind it.
And they pretty much burned through everything in under an hour - oh, but we forgot Hamlet. So they spent the second act doing Hamlet, then doing it faster, then doing it backwards.
Seemed like certain things were "personalized" to the group I saw performing it, but I'm not sure about that. There was a measure of audience participation, which was fun, too.
If you do get a chance to see it, I give it four stars out of four. Maybe minus a half star for the dozen or so teenaged drama geeks in front of me, but kids have to learn about Antony and Cleopatra somehow.
I saw that years and years ago at the Old Globe here in San Diego and it was sooo much fun . . . wish they would do it again!
Sort of a passing reference. But definitely there.
