Don't it always seem to go?

You don't know what you've got 'til it's gone. They paved paradise and put up a parking lot.

Hi, I'm Dave, and I have a deep and abiding loathing for a certain bloated software giant. I could probably work up a fair amount of distaste for any software giant, but one in particular riles me. To protect the anonymity of the monopolist empire, I'll just call it M-.

Today's rant against M- comes to you courtesy of the buyout of Vicinity Corporation. Vicinity Corporation appearantly used to run a webpage that I kind of liked, www.mapblast.com. The cool thing about this site was that you could get driving directions in a wacky abstract format, rather than a wiggly line on a roadmap format. For example, if I needed to drive west on 522, turn left onto 405 to go south, and then west on 520, that would be drawn as three straight lines, with time and distance estimates annotating each line. Sort of the way I think about the journey.

But no, M- has gone and incorporated mapblast into their 'service', and got rid of this feature. Now when I type in my beginning and ending points, all I get is the same old wiggly line that is 522, with another wiggly line for 405, and another wiggly line for 520.

And while I'm ranting, I notice that at the bottom of their webpage (which I end up at when I try to go to my lamented mapblast page), they brag about how their 'service' is more useful everyday. Yeah, guys. Tell yourself that. The M- page might be twice as useful today as it was yesterday, but mapblast is nothing to me now.

If they had an email address on their webpage, I'd save this rant for them, but of course, being a bloated software giant, they know better than to ask for feedback.

Evil, evil, grumble, evil.

I think that I'll download some free software just to spite them.
