How is it that Procter & Gamble dropped their trademark moon-and-stars logo due to rumors of Satanic ties, while Wal*Mart has a pentagram in the middle of their name with no apparent ill effect?

Perhaps the difference is that Wal*Mart really IS the spawn of Satan.

Actually, no - I looked it up, and a pentagram is any five-pointed (or, according to m-w.com, six-pointed, which is surely an abuse) star. It doesn't have to be a line drawing, it doesn't have to be inscribed in a circle. Orientation isn't important to the geometrical definition.

And if you look at a few Google hits for "pentagram", you'll see several uses of each "north pointing" and "south pointing" stars - drawing some distinction that the "south pointing" figures are used for more evil applications.

Of course, this sort of distinction seems a little too nuanced for those that get excited about this sort of thing - P&G got flak because people were connecting the stars in their logo to create the figure 666, and the whorls in the moon's beard had to be looked at in a mirror to be read as "666" (or, I guess, "999", if you held the mirror differently). It seems like applying the same loose standards to Wal*Mart can turn a north-facing star into a south-facing star, if you insist on the more evocative (ahem) goat's head orientation.

If you're going to go there, then the US flag has 50 pentagrams on it. No wonder the Middle East hates us so much.

They've been able to sell a T-Shirt with a Nazi insignia, without much ill effect either:
Google Search: walmart nazi shirt.
