Derivatives of the Lost Ark

Some kids made a remake of Raiders of the Lost Ark.

Spielberg wrote them letters thanking them for a loving tribute.

Ok, so that's all well and good. Rather incredible.

Predictably, there are some folk who aren't impressed.

Also note the yammerers on that last site who are holding this up as a creative and original work (and presumably, therefore, in the clear).

So my question to the masses is: Where does "creativity" and/or "originality" begin? Seems to me the kids showed originality in casting (Ok, Jayson, you be the guy with the hat) and in figuring out how to independantly achieve the special effects (on a much tighter budget). But I still have a really hard time using the words "creative" or "original" to describe their achievement. Seems like the whole point is how true to Spielberg's movie they could get, and anything that catches your eye as "original" is missing their goal.
