(no subject)

So, I got my vote-by-mail ballot today. It's been a lazy weekend, so I only got around to fetching the mail from the mailbox this afternoon, and there it was.

I'm somewhat saddened that my county has discontinued having polling locations. I'm sure there are plenty of good reasons to shift over to strictly vote-by-mail, but I enjoyed the ritual of going to some strange location, getting a stranger to check my name off a list, going into a quasiprivate booth and jabbing at random names on a touchscreen. Or sometimes a scantron form. I never got the chance to dangle my chad dangerously, nor pull down on the lever like they promised in that Schoolhouse Rock song.

Now, participating in the democratic experiment has all the joy of paying my water bill. Whee.

When neighboring King County was contemplating going to mail-only voting, I heard a radio call-in discussion about it, and I wasn't paying a lot of attention, but I was shocked to hear that someone was proposing "male only voting", which could only be a bad idea.
