Just to get the Go-Gos out of my head

No, seriously. One of the movies on my 2008 list is "Unforgiven" (1992, Clint Eastwood, Morgan Freeman, Gene Hackman). Rather, "was", as I just watched it. And, honestly, I chose it because this song has been going through my head. Out, damned earworm!

I liked it - I expect that if I had seen more of Eastwood's earlier work before seeing this movie, I'd appreciate it more. Eastwood's character is an older guy who in his youth was something of a legend, but he settled down and raised a family, putting his gunslinger days behind him.

I can also see this as an early instance of the "I'm to old for this stuff" pattern that we've seen since, where older characters take on unexpectedly active roles. (e.g. The Bucket List, Space Cowboys, Lethal Weapon 4, Rocky Balboa).

In particular, I appreciated the complexity of the characters - each of the major characters unfolds from what could be a stereotype into an interesting person over the course of the film.

Next up: The Straight Story (1999, Richrd Farnsworth, Harry Dean Stanton, Sissy Spacek, David Lynch).
