There's been no mandate coming down from on high that we burn any midnight oil (and incidentally, how can we dance while the world is turning?), but I've imposed a new work schedule on myself: Get up around 6am, turn on the laptop, turn on TiVo, burn through a movie that's been taunting me from the hard drive for months, go to work, go home, turn on TiVo, burn through another movie.
In part, this is an exercise in playing with my (relatively) new laptop computer, which I still think is pretty nifty, but I've been able to get some good work done at my coffee table. I might have got a little more work done if I had been forward-thinking enough to set up VPN stuff, but that was not to be last night.
So. Last night's movie was "Submerged", featuring Sam Neill and Emily Proctor. I think that this must have aired on USA at around 3am, because every commercial break had at least one ad for a phone chat line. The same line, although they might have had more than one ad. Maybe at 3am the ads seem less bizarre, but I was more disturbed than drawn. Hm. Make of that what you will.
The movie itself was forgettable - true story, experimental submarine went down, brave rescue, brave wives and girlfriends back on shore. Emily Proctor plays a brave wife well.
This morning's movie was "The Age of Treason", a murder mystery set in ancient Rome. I'm sure that it was full of anachronisms - the dialogue took no pains to be historically accurate. All the Romans spoke with British accents, which makes a certain amount of sense if you don't think about it at all, until you meet a character from Britain. I think she had a Scottish accent. Hard to say. Brian Brown (FX) and Amanda Pays (Max Headroom) lead this cast. If you're looking for a swords-and-sandals detective story, I can't imagine that you can find a better movie than this... or any other movie than this.
Afterwards, I caught the very tail end of "Henry V" with Branagh and Thompson. Much more enjoyable, but that's not saying much, in part because I'm a sucker for Shakespeare/Branagh/Thompson. I don't suspect we'll see much more from that threesome. Oh, well.
Stay tuned. Random other films from the dusty reaches of my TiVo forthcoming. Random comments, possibly about the movies, as well.
