do you have a microphone on your computer?
Are you an aspiring voice talent? Are you a professional voice?

If you have a few minutes, and have a way to record short voice clips, I'd LOVE it if you could send me a handful (something like 15-20) of messages for my game.

I've got 4 characters, each of whom needs to be able to say things in the following categories (number in parentheses is the rough number of lines in the category, lines given are examples):

  • [short affirmation (4-6)]

    • good!
    • nice!
    • OK!
    • go go go!
    • aces!

  • [short remonstration (3-4)]

    • oops!
    • no.
    • try again.

  • [full sentence affirmation (2-3)]

    • way to go, kid.
    • nicely done, sir.
    • that was good... but don't get cocky, punk.

  • [full sentence consolation (2-3)]

    • I'm sure you'll get it next time.
    • You'll need to do better!
    • That's not good enough for the big time, kid!

There are four characters (I'll be voicing Woody Tigerbaum, so I'm only "auditioning" candidates for the other three):

Tutorial Timmy - Male - Squeaky voiced junior member of the team. Think of the "I'll have to ask my manager" kid on The Simpsons.
Tyger Blake - Male - ex-military perfectionist. Think of Robert Patrick, Zap Branigan, William Riker.
Tess Turmoil - Female - tough as nails, intense, brainy. Uses short words and phrases, because she's thinking about 12 things at once. Think of Jordan from "Real Genius" crossed with Mira Sorvino's character in "The Replacement Killers".

For all of them, feel free to use the above lines as suggestions, not necessarily as a script. Get into character! How would Tess encourage a team member? How would she tell them they need to do better?

If you can record your take on one (or more) of the characters, send me a WAV or MP3 of your character's lines, along with the name that you'd like to be credited as. If you want to break it up into a bunch of small files, or one big file, that's fine - I can work with either.

If you can help me with any of these characters (especially Tess - there's no way I can believably do a female voice), I'd be very appreciative.

ETA The sooner you could get this to me, the better. Today or tomorrow would be good, Friday would be OK, but by Saturday, I'll be wrapping the game up for final upload. Thanks again.

How much fun is that? I have no idea how I'd record, though. I mean, microphone, yes, I have, but software...?

I haven't gotten a voice post to work on LJ in ages; that used to be how I got MP3s...

hm, if you've got Windows, there's the Windows Recorder thing:

Start/Programs/Accessories/Entertainment/Sound Recorder - if that works for you.

In a pinch, you could leave a message on my answering machine. :)

Another sound editing program, if you want to be fancy, is GoldWave:

I forget how long the evaluation period is, something like a month - plenty of time for our purposes. And, if you decide you like it, it's something like $45 to register - which is a bargain for the usefulness of the tool... if you do sound manipulation ever.

I'm still bitter that there were no Jordan types at BSC. Good luck finding a Real Genius girl in a conservative-arts college...

Dave! I'd so love to do this for you, and I have sexy voice right now because I'm sick. If you haven't got something already, I'll do it tonight.

Thanks! I'm not exactly going for "sexy", but I'd certainly appreciate your interpretation of "Tess Turmoil".

Wendy's also lined up to record Tess, but I'm still hoping to incorporate as much audio as I can get my hands on. I'll email you a slightly more Tess-focused script.

I've got a set for you (I don't know how they'll sound). Where can I send the files?
