First Mow, 2008
Not that I can take credit for it, but looking at my backyard cam:

I can see that the lawn's getting mowed today. Well, I heard a strange sound as I was getting ready to leave home this morning, which turned out to be somebody using a line-trimmer to knock down some of the most obnoxious of the tall grass near my front door.

Imagine, paying somebody to do a job I don't have time to do. A while ago, this guy came out to my place to provide an estimate, and he proceeded to tell me how big a job it was. I think that was to ease me in to what he expected would be sticker shock as he gave me the bad news. But what I didn't tell him was that every bit of bad news (oh, your grass is wet, and it's long, and you've got a big yard, and it's uneven) were reasons for me not to mow my own lawn - or reasons why mowing my own lawn was a big task, and a burden that I'd be happy to share with someone else.

I'm anxious to get back home to check out how the lawn looks now. The little bit that I can see from the webcam looks so much better.

I love paying people to do the things I don't have time for. Or that I can't be bothered to do (housecleaning, taxes, changing my car's oil). :)

It's weird - I'll pay someone else to change the oil in my car, and to do the hard part of mowing my lawn (I intend to ride the mower around some during the summer, but keep paying the lawn guys to take care of the stuff I don't get to). And, whenever I go to a restaurant, I pay people to feed me.

But when it comes to cleaning my house, I'm more conflicted - as though that one task is something that I ought to do myself. I've talked to my sister about this; she's had someone come in to clean before, and she's OK with it. If this were some sort of parental brainwashing I got from Mom, you'd think that my sister would have got a similar imprint.
